The word Doula comes from the ancient Greek for 'Woman Servant' or 'Hand Maiden'.

BIRTH DOULA

A Birth Doula is there for you and your partner, she will stay with you throughout your labour, however long. A Doula's role is to make sure the mother has a positive and enjoyable birth experience. The mother should be made to feel safe and supported. Throughout your pregnancy you will get to know your Doula so that during labour you will trust her and feel more relaxed and confident. I believe every women has the right to the birth she wants. Every birth is unique and an amazing experience.

A Doula does not support the mother in a clinical role. That is the job of the midwife/medical team. A Doula doesn't make decisions for you, she will only offer you her advice, and support you in whatever decision you make.

There are many benefits to having a Doula present at the birth. Some of these are:

  • 50% less likely to have a caesarean
  • Labour can be shortened by 25%
  • Boosts the mothers esteem
  • Can decrease the need for pain medication

POSTNATAL DOULA

Most Doula's tend to be mothers themselves, so they know how to offer the emotional and practical support that all new mothers need. This is called 'Mothering the Mother'.

In today's society women don't take the time after the birth to get used to being mothers. In some cultures the woman is made to rest for 30 days, while a female relative moves in to help.

New mothers sometimes find that they lack the kind of support their mothers/grandmothers had. So they often find themselves feeling like they are on their own without the emotional care they deserve.

Using a Postnatal Doula has many benefits which include:

  • Increased success in breastfeeding.
  • Mums feel more in control.
  • Reduces the risk of postnatal depression.
  • Fathers feel empowered and gain confidence.
  • Mothers feel more secure which results in a happier family.
